Sunday 24th Feb.

Just a short cycle today. Spent the morning at the house sanding and painting my skirting boards but still wanted to get a cycle in in the afternoon.

Stats

12.56 miles

37 mph max speed

1hr 13mins 21secs

10.2 mph average speed

Could really feel my knees ache from the previous day. But took this ride at a more relaxed pace. Though it felt a lot further than 12 miles! Wound round the local villages on the back roads so quite hilly. Saw a few other cyclists out aswell, and just as I got back it started to dribble with rain.

Further to yesterdays post I found there is a Garmin GPS cycle computer which uploads to your PC a map of your route with speeds etc for every part of it. Looked good but at over £200 it can stay on the shelf! I don’t know if buying anything like that would actually improve my cycling. I think I just need to put more miles on the road and build up my stamina and experience.

  1. Charles,

A 31-mile ride this early in the season is impressive, whatever the average speed. But take it easy; it’s very early in the year. A good rule of thumb is not travel more than about 50% of your regular weekly distance on any particular day.

Make sure you stay in low gears and pedal at a high cadence to take pressure off your knees. If your cyclocomputer doesn’t register cadence (pedal speed– in RPMs), that’s the next upgrade you want to make. In the meantime, you can use a stopwatch if you’re careful, and time your cadence as you would your pulse rate. Shoot for a cadence between 80 and 100 RPMs.

    Keep riding!
