This Easter weekend the TV Channel Dave has been showing a specially made 3 part Red Dwarf episode featuring the original cast. (Spoilers Ahead!). First though a bit of background, I never saw Red Dwarf the first time round, but mainly watched it while at University, and have collected the DVD’s. I suppose my favourite episodes are the Ace Rimmer ones!
Back to Earth – There hasn’t been a new Red Dwarf since series VIII was broadcast in 1999. So it’s quite a risk to bring this back over 9 years later.
Episode One – I enjoyed episode one, there was a lot of classic banter between characters, and all the events took place on Red Dwarf. At the end of the episode I thought it was worth watching but when compared with other episodes of Red Dwarf was quite average.
Episode Two – When Episode two starts they are dimension shifted into what we consider “the real world” – If my eyes didn’t deceive me into John Lewis Kingston upon Thames. I’m certain it was a John Lewis and pretty sure Kingston upon Thames. To me this seemed so clinched and the story continued that the Red Dwarf characters had to find their creators (Doug Naylor) and beg for a new series / extra episodes. They then begin a trek through London, working their way up from the Sci-Fi stores upwards trying to find the creator. I visibly cringed when a someone mentioned words to the effect of “you’re in Back to Earth on Dave”
Episode Three – They spend a third episode looking for their creator, visiting the real Craig Charles on Coronation street and then have a final showdown with the creator.
I won’t spoil the end, Overall there were some great scenes for all characters, making fun of Rimmer etc etc but overall the whole “Back to Earth” premise and coming into modern earth just isn’t Red Dwarf. Personally I won’t be buying the DVD as this isn’t how I want to remember the show. Some shows should be left alone!
