Spent the day doing several errands (mowing the lawn etc) but was ready to go out for a cycle at 3:30pm. Went onto www.mapmyride.com and started planning a route. Decided it would be good to go and do the off road cycle route from Penshurst to Tonbridge. Using map my ride I selected fairly far apart waypoints and let it fill in the gaps, synced it with my Garmin Edge 205 and then rode off.
It took me up the back roads to Pembury and Tunbridge Wells, but then took quite main roads through Southborough. After leaving Southborough it was great cycling along Bidborough ridge and on to Penshurst Place.
Although I have done the cycle through from Penshurst to Tonbridge it was sufficiently long ago that I didn’t remember it. It is a lovely scenic cycle, but and you knew there had to be a but! While it would be fine for mountain bikes / commuter bikes I found the ground a bit too bumpy and stony for my Giant OCR 4 road bike. I was worried that with my tyres at such a high pressure (100 PSI) compared to a typical mountain bike (40 PSI approx) that I may pierce one. But it was all fine,
Enjoyed cycling the route and past Tonbridge Castle, mapmyride then took me through the centre of Tonbridge and out onto one of the major A roads, from here I took the road towards Five Oak Green, and through to Capel, and up the huge hill into Matfield.
All in all a really good ride,
